St Mary’s College alumna, Miranda Guy (class of 2021) is a proud palawa woman who shared the legacy of her ancestor, Fanny Cochrane-Smith in her submission for 2023 ABC Heywire storytelling competition.

We are excited to announce that the piece, which the former Prefect wrote at school last, has been selected as the winning entry for lutruwita/Tasmania.

Miranda is one of 39 young people whose stories are showcased through the 2023 Heywire program, which puts Australian youth at the centre of the conversations that shape their communities.

As quoted on the ABC Heywire website, Miranda wants wants her story to highlight the resilience of her ancestors and ‘to break down some of the myths and misconceptions preventing people from identifying as a member of their culture’.

Miranda is currently studying law and representing her culture on a student committee at the University of Melbourne in the First Nations space.
