Audience members will be transported to northwest Louisiana in the 1980s when SMC’s Year 11/12 Drama 3 students present their upcoming production, Steel Magnolias.
Based on the stage play by American writer, Robert Harling, the heart-warming comedy-drama explores the bond shared between six southern women – with a penchant for gossip and big hair – in a small-town beauty parlour.
Directed by Senior Drama teacher, Leah Smith, the play will be showing on Thursday 14 and Friday 15 June at 7.00pm in St Peter’s Hall, corner of Harrington and Brisbane streets. Tickets are $5 at the door.
It is said that Harling was inspired to write Steel Magnolias after his younger sister, Susan, died from Type 1 diabetes complications in 1985. The playwright intended the title of the play to suggest that the main female characters were ‘as delicate as the magnolia flower and tough as steel’.
