At St Mary’s College, we are passionate about our local environment and reducing our ecological footprint, one step at a time.
Our canteen, Murphy’s, plays an important role in the College’s sustainability movement, which looks at positive ways that we can improve our waste management practices and reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill.
Initiated by the College’s student-led sustainability group, The Footprint Project, the canteen serves healthy, tasty meals while doing away with single-use products and packaging. The College uses reusable plates, bowls, cups and cutlery for all staff and students to enjoy their meals before being returned to the canteen for washing and re-use.
These changes, which were implemented at the end of 2019, have led to a significant decrease in waste volume, with only one garbage bin of rubbish now coming from Murphy’s each day.
Canteen Manager, Phil Shanny provides healthy, delicious and nutritious food – all made onsite with sustainable packaging, free-range eggs and locally sourced ingredients.
The St Mary’s College Junior School has been awarded gold level standard for their menu by the Tasmanian School Canteen Association.
The Canteen Accreditation Program is unique in that it promotes both best practice for canteen management and schools’ approach to healthy eating, and also responds to the nutritional needs of Tasmanian children and adolescents.
The Senior School is currently awarded silver by the Tasmanian School Canteen Association and is working towards gold accreditation.
Monday to Friday for breakfast, recess and lunch from 8.30am-1.30pm.
Healthy eating policy
St Mary’s College has a healthy eating policy and is a Move Well Eat Well School*.
Within the College student cohort there are a number of students who have food allergies ranging from very mild to serious. As part of its duty of care to students, the College actively promotes allergy awareness and has an Anaphylaxis Policy to respond to any incident of an allergic reaction.
Please note that packaged drinks have been discontinued, instead offering hot beverages and juice to Senior School students (in a reusable cup). We encourage all students to drink water.
Move Well Eat Well accreditation applies to the Junior School.
The canteen name was commissioned in August 2020.
The name Murphy’s was inspired by Mother Murphy who was the first Principal of St Mary’s College.
In 1866, perceiving a great need in the fledgling colony for spiritual guidance, Bishop Daniel Murphy arranged for the Mother Superior of the Presentation Order (who happened to be his own sister), to travel from Ireland to bring Nano Nagle’s mission to far-off Hobart Town.
On 3 February 1868, the small school of Mount St Mary’s (as we were then known) received its first pupils.
This name was nominated by Wendy Forsyth, Director of Curriculum.
