Local Aboriginal Trawlwoolway artist Reuben Oates will be working on an art installation for St Mary’s College in partnership with a group of our K-12 students.
Reuben, who was taught to paint by his father, Leigh Oates, predominately depicts Australian native animals from the region surrounding his home.
He is associated with Art Mob in Hobart’s Hunter Street arts precinct – Tasmania’s only dedicated Aboriginal art gallery, and his exhibitions at the gallery have included ‘Tasmanian Living Artists’ Week’ (2007) and ‘Leigh and Reuben Oates Father and Son Exhibition’ (2006).
Reuben has been working with other schools in our region to celebrate the importance of Tasmanian Aboriginal culture, knowing that this will raise the educational outcomes of our students, as well as their awareness, understanding and appreciation of Tasmanian Aboriginal culture.
We will be welcoming Reuben to our College on Tuesday 13 June and look forward to keeping you updated about this exciting project.
