Year 9 students retreat into reflection

Posted on in Senior School

During Weeks 5, 6 and 7 of this term, our Year 9 students participated in their annual Retreat Days in Richmond. This year’s theme, ‘People on a Journey’ explored the idea that life is a journey, with hills and valleys, good weather and bad. Students reflected on the companions who walk alongside them, especially considering the presence of God throughout their lives.

We also delved into the concept of pilgrimage, a special kind of journey that holds particular significance in this Jubilee year. We were privileged to hear from Leanne Prichard, who shared her powerful experience of walking the 40-day Camino de Santiago pilgrimage in Spain. Inspired by her story, we embarked on our own mini pilgrimage to St John’s Church.

There, we visited the Old School House, where the nine Presentation Sisters who founded St Mary’s College taught for 18 months (1866–67) while the College was under construction. We also paused at the monument dedicated to the Presentation Sisters, taking time to reflect on our connection to these courageous women and their enduring legacy.

Thank you to our Youth Minister, Belle Young, for facilitating these days, with the support of our Life and Faith teachers.

Groving our love of learning

St Mary's College is located on the traditional lands of the muwinina people of the South East Nation. We acknowledge and deeply respect the palawa people, the Tasmanian Aboriginal Community, and all Elders past and present. We are committed to learning alongside our students and community in this place, nipaluna, and support the continued sharing of knowledge and culture.
