Thank you so much to Andrew Smith, of R&R Smith Organic Apple Company, and Richard, manager of Glen Huon Dairy Farm, who recently hosted our Year 9 students over three days.
We really appreciated Andrew and Richard giving up their valuable time to give us tours of their farms and educate students about their organic produce, including how it is grown, marketed and sold.
The students learned first hand how apples, cider, milk and meat produce get from farm to fork. Andrew and Richard were wonderful with our students, providing them with the opportunity to sample the apples—straight from the apple shed—and fresh milk, and pat the cows, pigs and chickens at the dairy farm.
Both farms are completely organic and have developed excellent sustainable farming practices.
Andrew’s business was featured in a Mercury article (Monday 7 June) about the development of a new apple variety spearheaded by R&R Smith with the support of Woolworths. Andrew is pictured here with students Asmita, Matilda and Maya, who enjoyed sampling the local produce. View more photos from the visit in the latest edition of The Fountain newsletter here.
All students were truly engaged over the three days and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Not even the cold Tassie weather could dampen their enthusiasm. They were great ambassadors for the College and conducted themselves with pride.
Thank you also to the wonderful teachers who accompanied us on the field trip days: Gabrielle Stuebing, Jessica Vietch, Gillian Goldsworthy and Rosaleen Macaulay.
