Painting and yarning together

Posted on in Junior School

Nothing beats a day of painting and yarning!

Our First Nations students recently spent time On Country at Midway Point, connecting with local culture and traditions. Together, the group walked along the shoreline, gathering natural ochre while discovering the story of Ballawinnie (ochre) across Lutruwita/Tasmania.

After grinding the raw earth into traditional paint, the students used it to decorate a ‘Ya Pulingina’ sign – a palawa kani welcome message that will soon proudly greet our community at the College’s Brisbane Street entrance!

Groving our love of learning

St Mary's College is located on the traditional lands of the muwinina people of the South East Nation. We acknowledge and deeply respect the palawa people, the Tasmanian Aboriginal Community, and all Elders past and present. We are committed to learning alongside our students and community in this place, nipaluna, and support the continued sharing of knowledge and culture.
