Culture-crafters: STEM students recreate Dreamtime story in Minecraft

Four tech-savvy STEM students have used their Minecraft skills to bring their interpretation of a Dreamtime story to life.
Over the course of eight weeks, Lottie, Emily, Josie and Sophie (Year 6) designed and built an immersive Minecraft world – complete with characters, landscapes and cultural elements – that authentically represents ‘The Creation of Trowunna (Lutruwita)’, a traditional Palawa story about the origins of lutruwita/Tasmania.
With guidance from their Year 7 mentors, Alexia and Eva, who offered coding hacks, technical support and creative advice, the students entered their virtual project into the Australian Esports League Competition. They are now awaiting the results, which will be announced on 16 June. Congratulations to these creative coders for unleashing their imaginations and working collaboratively while also reflecting on the cultural importance of the narrative. Great work, team!
