Dear Parents and Carers,
I have read a great deal, as many of you would have, about George Pell. As a Catholic School Principal, I think it is important I make a clear statement to our community.
I condemn child abuse of any kind in the strongest possible terms, as does the Church. My understanding of the Australian legal system is that convictions are not in any way notionally suspended or less strongly held because the convicted person appeals. Pell has been convicted of five counts of child sexual abuse. I am deeply sorry for the complainant and his friend who died. I stand in solidarity with them, their families and all victims and survivors of sexual abuse.
St Mary’s College and Catholic Education Tasmania have a strong child protection policy based on the National Standards for Protecting Australia’s Children. I have included below John Mula’s letter, Director of Catholic Education Tasmania, which includes a link to the policy.Catholic Education Tasmania Letter
