Cocurricular offerings in addition to sport

Musical and artistic groups
There are a number of musical groups for students to get involved in at SMC, including: Year 7 Band, Concert Band, Rock Band, Senior Choir, Choral Group, Year 3 Choir, Year 4 Choir and Year 5/6 Choir.

Any Year 7 student who can play an instrument is welcome to join the Year 7 Band. Students will practice once a week during lunch time and have the opportunity to perform at College music events.
SENIOR CONCERT BAND
Year 7-12 students who enjoy the chance to perform in a band and are dedicated to attending a weekly practice may like to join the Concert Band. For more information, contact Mr Scott Weston.
ROCK BAND
Senior students who have an interest in rock music, performing and are dedicated to attending a weekly practice may like to join the Rock Band. For more information, contact Mr Scott Weston.
SENIOR CHOIR
Senior choir is a great group for Year 7-12 students to join if they enjoy singing and performing. The Senior Choir meets once a week during lunch for practice and perform at events such as Masses and concerts. For more information, contact Mr Scott Weston.
CHORAL GROUP
Year 7-12 students with a talent for singing may be invited to join the Choral Group. This small group practices weekly and performs during liturgies, Masses and other musical events.
JUNIOR SCHOOL CHOIRS
The Junior School has three choir groups which are a compulsory part of the music curriculum – the Year 3 Choir, Year 4 Choir and Year 5/6 Choir. Students practice singing during their music line and perform at eisteddfods and other music events.
ART CLUB
Art Club provides an opportunity for senior students to work on their art projects in the art rooms during lunch. It is a casual club that meets a couple of days each week and students can participate as much or as little as they like. Students might use the club to catch up on class art projects, work on self-directed art activities or engage in mindful colouring in, cartooning and origami etc.
Academic groups
Chess Club, debating and Tournament of Minds are some cocurricular activities with an academic focus at SMC for both Junior and Senior Students.

Chess Club is available to both Junior and Senior School students, but they each run to a different format.
Prep to Year 6 students can participate in a Chess Club run by external chess organisation Black Square Chess. This group meets once a week in the Student Resource Centre (SRC) for an hour after school each term. Senior School students can participate casually in Chess Club during lunch times at the SRC. This is run through the College and does not attract a fee. Students are welcome to use the chess boards to play at recess in the SRC also.
DEBATING
Debating is ideal for those who enjoy critical thinking, teamwork, public speaking, and forming persuasive arguments. It’s a great opportunity to build confidence, develop communication skills, and engage with current issues.
Senior School Debating
Debating runs during Terms 1 and 2, with the debates taking place fortnightly on Wednesday evenings. Throughout the week, students attend scheduled meetings to prepare and plan their debates. Students are responsible for organising their transport to debate locations.
Junior School Debating
In the Junior School, debating is offered to Year 6 students during Term 2.
Students are placed onto SMC teams which compete against other schools in the area throughout the term. (The number of debates each student participates in depends on the team size.)
TOURNAMENT OF MINDS
Tournament of Minds (TOM) is an international program that fosters creative thinking, cooperative learning and teamwork. Students form teams of seven members and have six weeks to finalise their solutions to long term challenges that are presented on Challenge Day. Teams must also complete a spontaneous challenge on this day.

Community Action Groups
Caring for the community is a focus of the College and we have a number of cocurricular groups with community in mind, including: SMC Cares, Justice Action Group, Inservio, Altar Servers and the Sustainability Group.

SMC Cares provides the opportunity for students to get involved in community outreach and fundraising for Catholic Charitable organisations. The group has a different focus each term. Term 1 is Caritas and incorporates Easter buns sales and usually a raffle in the week preceding Easter. Term 2 is Vinnies and includes the clothing drive/Winter woollies and PJ day. Term 3 is fundraising for Catholic Mission through Crazy Sock Day.
JUSTICE ACTION GROUP
The Justice Action group provides an opportunity for students who are passionate about social issues to gather and raise awareness amongst the school community. We will have awareness initiatives for such things as Homelessness Week, Harmony Day and Reconciliation Week.
FOOTPRINT / SUSTAINABILITY
This group provides the opportunity for students to discuss climate change issues and direct sustainability initiatives across the school. The group meets fortnightly during lunch time.
INSERVIO
Inservio is a group of Senior students who meet to plan school liturgies and prayers to ensure there is a student direction with the themes and concepts. The group meets once a week at recess. For more information, contact Mrs Sharon Lawler.
ALTAR SERVER
Altar servers are responsible for assisting the priest during liturgical celebrations, such as Mass, by carrying liturgical books, holding candles and performing other tasks as needed. To be eligible to be an Altar Server, students will have already received the Holy Communion for the first time.
