Grace Willis (Year 5) traveled to Newcastle recently to attend the National Musical Theatre Festival called Junior Theatre Celebration Australia (JTCOZ). She shares her experience below:
‘The festival is hosted by iTheatrics which is the musical theatre part of the Disney Corporation. I went to Newcastle for eight days and had the opportunity to work with international industry icons – directors, producers, musicians and choreographers.
As part of this amazing opportunity I got to pilot Disney’s brand new musical theatre script for Finding Nemo. We auditioned for roles (I got Nemo’s obnoxious classmate Tad), workshopped the production for five days and then performed it at the opening night of the national festival. The festival was attended by over 600 musical theatre children aged 8-18 from across the country.
My Musical Theatre Crew Junior Ensemble mates joined me on Friday for the three-day weekend festival. We performed a preview of our upcoming production of Madagascar for a panel of judges and won the group award for choreography.
From my group performance I was selected to perform in the final night finale – the JTCOZ Celebrations Cast (one of 40 children out of the whole 600 who performed across the weekend).
I was also invited to join the Aussie All Stars Team (national group of 40 children) which will tour the USA in January 2021. We will perform and compete against Musical Theatre troops from other countries, attend industry workshops hosted by iTheatrics, and also spend time behind the scenes at Disneyland, Universal Studios and Broadway.’
