Letter to Parents and Carers

Written by SMC Administrator. Posted in Timeline

Dear Parents and Carers,

I have read a great deal, as many of you would have, about George Pell. As a Catholic School Principal, I think it is important I make a clear statement to our community.

I condemn child abuse of any kind in the strongest possible terms, as does the Church. My understanding of the Australian legal system is that convictions are not in any way notionally suspended or less strongly held because the convicted person appeals. Pell has been convicted of five counts of child sexual abuse. I am deeply sorry for the complainant and his friend who died. I stand in solidarity with them, their families and all victims and survivors of sexual abuse.

St Mary’s College and Catholic Education Tasmania have a strong child protection policy based on the National Standards for Protecting Australia’s Children. I have included below John Mula’s letter, Director of Catholic Education Tasmania, which includes a link to the policy.

Students benefit from P&F’s additions

Welcoming 2019 with P&F improvements

Your P&F would like to welcome you to a new school year!

New meeting dates have been added, so please have a look below, as we would love to see some new faces.

To start the new year, we wanted to share with you where our fundraising dollars have gone to with some photos. The P&F fully funded a portable stage that can now be used for a range of College events – we think it looks great – and have received a very heartfelt thank you from the school. The stage was recently used for a photoshoot with The Mercury.

The P&F have also contributed to the new Year 5 class room furniture set-up. We were invited to have a look at the rooms, and I must say, the teachers have done a wonderful job and the rooms look amazing; I am sure our Year 5 girls are enjoying this more relaxed style of learning.

The playground equipment, made possible with funding from the P&F, was a welcome addition to the Bottom Court, and I am sure will bring lots of enjoyment throughout the years to come.

We have also purchased additional STEM learning devices (Spheros) for Year 6 students to code and use as part of their ongoing education.

Once again, we have some community events planned for this year – including Mother’s and Father’s Day breakfasts – which we hope to see you at; more information on these events will follow, so watch this space!

Entertainment Memberships available soon

The P&F is thrilled to be launching the new 2019 – 2020 Entertainment Memberships soon!

For Junior – Year 7 students, the books will be sent home with the youngest student in each family.

Students in Year 8 – 12 will be able to purchase either a hardcopy book from Student Services after April 3, 2018, or can down an app version now, here.

Pre-orders are now open, so please take advantage of bonus Early Bird offers while they last – not only can you enjoy bonus vouchers, but you’ll also receive a $20 Woolworths Online offer and $50 Cellarmasters Online offer!

Celebrating 25 editions, the 2019 – 2020 Entertainment Membership is arguably their best edition yet.
