In 1888, the Sisters added this attractive and spacious two-storey wing (pictured here) to the original Convent building to cater for their growing school. The upper floor was used for nearly 100 years as a dormitory for boarders and later as a Senior Common Room, while the lower floor was used initially as an assembly room. The assembly room later became classrooms, then the Drama room and in more recent years, the Staff kitchen and dining area.

The Reflection Garden was created in 2011 behind this wing to provide a place of contemplation and stillness. Staff and students use this as a quiet place where they can sit in the sun, listening to the trickling of the water feature.

This garden is also a place where we remember some of the students and staff who passed away while enrolled in, or employed at, the College. Their family and friends often meet here to remember them and place flowers near their plaques.

Let us think of those Sisters, staff and students who have passed away as we pray…

We take time to remember these and all people whose lives were stirred and transformed by faith;

those who became bearers of light, hope, healing, justice and peace for us and for our world.

We hold them in our hearts.

We remember their stories of life and faith.

We pray too that we may be bearers of light, love and faith in our communities.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Groving our love of learning

St Mary's College is located on the traditional lands of the muwinina people of the South East Nation. We acknowledge and deeply respect the palawa people, the Tasmanian Aboriginal Community, and all Elders past and present. We are committed to learning alongside our students and community in this place, nipaluna, and support the continued sharing of knowledge and culture.
