Since ancient times, the labyrinth has been recognised as a sacred symbol for life or heroic journey. It is not a maze, rather it is a path of prayer, a walking meditation and a spiritual resource that provides those on its journey with a powerful tool for transformation.
In 2023, this labyrinth was built in the grounds of St Mary’s College to provide staff and students with a means to explore different ways to experience prayer.
This labyrinth is a contemporary design, inspired by the one in Chartres Cathedral with seven circuits to the centre. It has a single path with twists and turns and some expansive sweeps to the large circular middle. As the last station in the Reflection Walk, this labyrinth offers an opportunity for participants to reflect on their experience through the steady rhythm of the labyrinth walk.

Labyrinth under construction and the finished product
How to walk the labyrinth:
- Preparing: What is your purpose for walking the labyrinth? Do you carry a worry? Do you have a question? Are you walking for someone else?
- Entering: Wait at the start until the person in front has turned the first corner, then pause and bow to show respect. Enter, with an open heart and mind, focusing on the path.
- Reaching the Centre: When you reach the centre, pause for as long as you need. This can be a time of prayer, guidance, rest, listening and openness.
- Walking Out: When you are ready, take the same path out of the labyrinth. As you go, notice any differences in your walking; review and reflect.
- Leaving: When you reach the exit, turn to the centre and bow as a gesture of thanks.
- Reflecting: How did you feel walking the labyrinth? What was your favourite part? What did you notice? About yourself? About others? What might the labyrinth teach us about life?

Prayer
Gracious God, You have guided us through the winding paths of history, just as You guided the Presentation Sisters across oceans and lands, from the shores of Ireland to the heart of Tasmania.
As we walk this labyrinth of faith, we journey inward, seeking the wisdom of Nano Nagle, whose light of learning and compassion illuminates our way.
Step by step, may we draw closer to You, embracing the stillness and reflection found in each turn, remembering the courage and dedication of those who came before us, who built with faith the foundations of St Mary’s College.
With every step outward, may we be renewed, carrying forward the mission of love, justice, and peace, spreading light in the darkness, just as Nano did, so that our lives may also be a beacon of hope for others.
Bless our journey today and always, and may the spirit of the Presentation Sisters, rooted in your divine presence, continue to inspire and guide us on the path of service and faith.
In your holy name, we pray, Amen.

You are now invited to conclude this Reflection Walk by walking the labyrinth at your own pace.
